When NOT to Migrate to Management Reporter

April 28, 2010 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA 6 Comments

This is a very quick list of circumstances in which you probably should not migrate (immediately) to Management Reporter:

  • If you rely heavily on email distribution
  • If you need to report on Forecaster data
  • If you export to Excel and really need the ‘Format as Excel Outline’ functionality
  • If you use FRx’s Currency Translation module
  • If you extensively use Effective Dates (often used for Quarter To Date reporting)
  • If you use lots of Row Linking
  • If you rely on WebPort

But know that things are changing very quickly and functionality is being added every day. So while the above list is true today, it may not hold true in just a few months.

Another thing to know—there may be workarounds for the above list, especially for email distribution, Excel outline, quarter to date reporting, and row linking. (Even for WebPort; wouldn’t that be fun to ditch?) Anyway, there may be some creative solutions.

There may be other factors to consider too, and each situation should be considered on a case by case basis, but barring any big barriers I’d sure be tempted to go for it.

Apparently Analytical Accounting is included in the data provider that is shipping in early May 2010. Jan

Hi Jon…Service Pack 1 (for MR v2) was just released yesterday.

Now the development team is working on the first Feature Pack which is due out late 2010. It will support GP’s new currency translation features and also will contain the first rollout of integration to Forecaster so you’ll be able to pull Forecaster budgets into MR reports.

Any more on the email functionality? I would love to know if this is planned for the next release.

What I heard at Convergence was that Sharepoint alerts (links) are coming in Feature Pack 2 at the end of calendar year 2011. Sharepoint required. No email of excel files at this point.

About

Hey! I'm a CPA and I specialize in Management Reporter and FRx. [Sometimes with a side of snark.] I've been doing this for 22 years (yikes). But when I'm not working I can be found reveling in live music & pizza trailers at home in Austin Texas! —Jan Lenoir Harrigan More

Why fight with Microsoft's manual? Life is too short as it is.

My first manual—4 foundation reports:

My second manual—12 more reports:
covers-ii-2d
My third (and hopefully last) manual—cashflow:

Watch out—a few unscrupulous consultants are lifting copyrighted original content from several sites, this one included, and passing it off as their own. I'm hacked off and I don't mind naming names. Bottom line—be very careful about whom you hire!

Who I Work With

I work with zillions of companies who run Dynamics GP, AX and SL.

And lots of other consultants.

So I work with accountants who need accurate financials to help close the books. Not to mention present to the Board.

I don't sell or install MR. [How smart am I?]

FRx is Toast

FRx is toast—and I hope you're getting rid of it soon—but just in case someone still needs to learn it:

  • FRx in 8 Hours—Introduction
  • FRx in 8 Hours—Intermediate

BTW, if you're on Dynamics, you can migrate to MR, but you should know there are other options. Choose what's best for you.

New to MR?

Here are 3 essentials to know before you start.

Background—back in the day, FRx was a famous midmarket report writer from a small agile company in Colorado. Then it got acquired. [Sigh]

Now it's owned by Microsoft. They rewrote it and rebranded it Management Reporter.

The two are very much alike and much of the FRx content here also applies to MR.
