Fighting FRx Month Descriptions with 4/4/5 Accounting?

July 28, 2007 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA 3 Comments

Learned something interesting from a client the other day. They're using 4/4/5 accounting periods, and for a long time, they fought the @month code in their column headings. FRx would often pick up an incorrect month from their perspective, although that programming is by … [Read more...]

The Techie Version of Life’s Too Short To Do Balance Sheets in Crystal

July 14, 2007 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA 6 Comments

Why two reportwriters? I get this question often. I've had a number of responses to my 'Life's Too Short To Do Balance Sheets in Crystal' post, so I thought I'd do one more on the FRx vs. Crystal question, this time a little more techie. Why are there two reportwriters … [Read more...]

How to Indent in FRx Without Spending Your Life at the Spacebar

July 2, 2007 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA 1 Comment

It's easy to spend way too much time indenting FRx descriptions. Here's a better way. You want to indent your detail account names, and you sit at the keyboard and enter an exact number of spaces before each name. Or, one of my old consulting tricks is to concatenate the account … [Read more...]

How to Export an FRx Spec Set

June 19, 2007 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA Leave a Comment

Export a group of FRx reports for backup or for import. Spec Sets in FRx contain a particular grouping of rows, columns, trees, and catalogs. There's one for the demo reports that are built into FRx. There's at least one for your company unless of course you have a brand new … [Read more...]

Life’s Too Short to do Balance Sheets in Crystal

June 16, 2007 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA Leave a Comment

Thanks to my good friend George McMann for the title! That just about sums it up. Lots of people, when they're implementing a new GL, are confused about why there are TWO reportwriters, often Crystal Reports and FRx. Why two? FRx is a specialized tool used for financial … [Read more...]

About

Hey! I'm a CPA and I specialize in Management Reporter and FRx. [Sometimes with a side of snark.] I've been doing this for 22 years (yikes). But when I'm not working I can be found reveling in live music & pizza trailers at home in Austin Texas! —Jan Lenoir Harrigan More

Learn Management Reporter

Why fight with Microsoft's manual? Life is too short as it is.

My first manual—4 foundation reports:
covers-i-2d
My second manual—12 more reports:
covers-ii-2d
My third (and hopefully last) manual—cashflow:
covers-iii-2d

Watch out—a few unscrupulous consultants are lifting copyrighted original content from several sites, this one included, and passing it off as their own. I'm hacked off and I don't mind naming names. Bottom line—be very careful about whom you hire!

Who I Work With

I work with zillions of companies who run Dynamics GP, AX and SL.

And lots of other consultants.

So I work with accountants who need accurate financials to help close the books. Not to mention present to the Board.

I don't sell or install MR. [How smart am I?]

FRx is Toast

FRx is toast—and I hope you're getting rid of it soon—but just in case someone still needs to learn it:

  • FRx in 8 Hours—Introduction
  • FRx in 8 Hours—Intermediate

BTW, if you're on Dynamics, you can migrate to MR, but you should know there are other options. Choose what's best for you.

New to MR?

Here are 3 essentials to know before you start.

Background—back in the day, FRx was a famous midmarket report writer from a small agile company in Colorado. Then it got acquired. [Sigh]

Now it's owned by Microsoft. They rewrote it and rebranded it Management Reporter.

The two are very much alike and much of the FRx content here also applies to MR.
