FRx Replacement: Management Reporter

March 25, 2008 By Jan Lenoir Harrigan CPA Leave a Comment

FRx’s replacement is called Management Reporter.

It is a part of the PerformancePoint Server (PPS), Microsoft’s player in the business intelligence (BI) space. Think ProClarity if you will.

I won’t really touch on PPS in this space other than to say that it works with operational data and financial data. It’s also pretty pricey for the midmarket. There’s an excellent recap at Mark Polino’s DynamicAccounting post on PerformancePoint.

Anyway, back to Management Reporter. The word is that it will be available as a standalone module, meaning you won’t be forced to purchase the entire PerformancePoint Server suite of products. Today, however, you must buy PerformancePoint to get Management Reporter.

Management Reporter has a new user interface, but still uses the row, column, and tree building block concept, so you should be able to pick it up pretty quickly.

Timeframe
Today, purchasers of PPS with Software Assurance also receive Management Reporter. It was released for Dynamics AX using the Data Import Wizard (no direct GL integration yet) in December 2007. Same thing for GP, but it’s coming in the GP10 Feature Pack (Mark Polino tells me June 2008). SL and NAV are still in the planning stages.

They are still working on the direct GL integrations. AX is to be finished “any minute”.

For non-MBS ERPs like Sage and Epicor, the timeframe depends on your software publisher. Each publisher is creating its own integration. Right now, I don’t have any word on timing.

Back End
C# managed code, .NET Framework, SQL Server back end database.
Looks like Launcher and Drilldown Viewer will not be separate applications.
No .frd (drilldown viewer) files: all stored in relational database.
System requirements haven’t increased.

Pricing
I don’t have word on pricing yet. It’s still being worked out.
Is a trade-in for Forecaster available? I couldn’t get details yet.
Same thing for trade-in for FRx.
Licensing still being worked out.
(Sound like a broken record?)

About

Hey! I'm a CPA and I specialize in Management Reporter and FRx. [Sometimes with a side of snark.] I've been doing this for 22 years (yikes). But when I'm not working I can be found reveling in live music & pizza trailers at home in Austin Texas! —Jan Lenoir Harrigan More

Why fight with Microsoft's manual? Life is too short as it is.

My first manual—4 foundation reports:

My second manual—12 more reports:
covers-ii-2d
My third (and hopefully last) manual—cashflow:

Watch out—a few unscrupulous consultants are lifting copyrighted original content from several sites, this one included, and passing it off as their own. I'm hacked off and I don't mind naming names. Bottom line—be very careful about whom you hire!

Who I Work With

I work with zillions of companies who run Dynamics GP, AX and SL.

And lots of other consultants.

So I work with accountants who need accurate financials to help close the books. Not to mention present to the Board.

I don't sell or install MR. [How smart am I?]

FRx is Toast

FRx is toast—and I hope you're getting rid of it soon—but just in case someone still needs to learn it:

  • FRx in 8 Hours—Introduction
  • FRx in 8 Hours—Intermediate

BTW, if you're on Dynamics, you can migrate to MR, but you should know there are other options. Choose what's best for you.

New to MR?

Here are 3 essentials to know before you start.

Background—back in the day, FRx was a famous midmarket report writer from a small agile company in Colorado. Then it got acquired. [Sigh]

Now it's owned by Microsoft. They rewrote it and rebranded it Management Reporter.

The two are very much alike and much of the FRx content here also applies to MR.
