Using Management Reporter 2012 with AX 2012

by Jan Harrigan CPA

Heads Up on this important change

Background—on July 31, 2012, the latest update for MR 2012 was released. It’s called Management Reporter 2012 RU 2 (for rollup 2).

This is the very last release for the ‘regular’ AX 2012 data provider. This is the data provider that allows MR to talk live to the AX database. But it’s slow, very slow, due to architecture changes in the new AX.

So Microsoft is moving all AX 2012 customers to the data mart provider which is much faster.

So to boil it all down…if you’re using AX 2012 and you’re not using the datamart, you should make plans to switch.

Here is more information on using Management Reporter 2012 with AX 2012.

Here is more information straight from the horse’s mouth, the Dynamics CPM blog on Management Reporter.

Cheers! Jan

One Fix for Management Reporter’s Unknown Error

Just a quick post today. I’ve seen the “An Unknown Error Has Occurred” message less frequently recently, but here’s one I want to mention.

  • Twice it has been due to content in the Header 1 row in a column definition
  • Both times it was on Management Reporter v2.0 (meaning it wasn’t MR 2012)
  • In both instances, the client was running AX
  • One client was running AX2009, the other running AX2012
  • I haven’t seen it on GP yet
  • In both instances, the content in Header 1 was just text, nothing fancy

So if your report is crashing with the ‘unknown error’ message,

  • go see if you’ve got something in Header 1 in the column
  • insert a blank row, then delete Header 1 altogether (so the new blank row becomes Header 1)
  • if that doesn’t work and the column is simple, copy and paste the body into a new column
  • or test and troubleshoot until you get it to work
A quick screenshot

Hope this saves someone some time! Cheers—Jan

Use a Hidden Setting to Sort Drilldowns by Account

July 17, 2012

Sorting in Management Reporter 2012 Here’s sort of a hidden setting that I think almost everyone should know about. It impacts how your accounts sort when you drill down. I’ve drilled down on Operating Expense Notice these accounts are sorting by segment 1 which happens to be department in this database. But I want my [...]

What’s New in Management Reporter 2012

April 3, 2012

Management Reporter 2012 has just been released. Here’s the latest scoop from Convergence in Houston a couple weeks ago. Off the bat, here are the ERPs it works with: AX2012, AX2009, GP2010, SL2011, and NAV2009. One of the biggest changes involves this formatting of account numbers (that just about everyone has complained about):You now have [...]

Using Management Reporter with AX

March 15, 2012

Using Management Reporter with Dynamics AX? Or maybe thinking about it? This is a quick post on a few things you might want to know. Much of this information depends on what version of AX you’re running. That’s always my first question when talking to a Management Reporter prospect who’s running AX. If you’re running AX [...]
