by Jan Harrigan CPA

Stay out of FRx trouble!

This tip is a different from the usual report design tips and tricks.

It’s all about avoiding problems.

The SysData directory contains the reports and components. Back it up. While this won’t exactly prevent corruption, it does prevent disaster. Don’t forget offsite storage. [click to continue…]

Creating FRx Quarter To Date Reports

by Jan Harrigan CPA

Lots of ways to create QTD reports. Here’s one.

FRx does not natively support QTD reporting, so these reports can be a bit difficult if you don’t already know how. The trick is to create at least four column layouts for one report, then use effective dates in the catalog to force FRx to automatically choose the correct column based on the report date.

There are many ways to create quarter to date reports. This is just one. Here’s the example: [click to continue…]

Creating PDFs from FRx Reports

by Jan Harrigan CPA

FRx to PDF—a couple of ways

FRx doesn’t really support creating PDFs other than through their WebPort product (purchased through your GL vendor).

However, here are a couple of ways you can generate a PDF file from a drilldown viewer file. You’ll need a PDF printer driver installed. [click to continue…]

How to Create Vertical Lines in FRx

by Jan Harrigan CPA

Vertical lines offer improved legibility; in short, they just make reports look better.

Here’s a short example:
Use vertical lines in FRx to improve appearance
Here’s an overview of how you achieve this look: your column will contain two Fill columns with widths of 1. Your row will reference these columns with Box Begin and Box Complete format codes. Here’s how.

How to use Hyphens in Place of Zeros in FRx

by Jan Harrigan CPA

This is a cool tip that I picked up from one of my nonprofit FRx clients.

They wanted to see a hyphen instead of a zero, sort of like the Accounting format in Excel. Here’s how. Go to the Company menu, International Formats, and pull up your currency, in this case USD for US Dollars. This is what it probably looks like: [click to continue…]

Specify a Worksheet Name when Linking FRx to Excel

by Jan Harrigan CPA

Some syntax for pulling data from Excel into FRx

This is the syntax for specifying a specific worksheet (tab) name in an Excel workbook:

c:\frxtrain\io_data\[tutorial.xls]corp

But note that you’ll probably use universal pathing in which the server name is specified:
\\servernameyadayada in place of the local c drive!

Link FRx to Excel to Calculate Statistics

by Jan Harrigan CPA

Pulling data from Excel into FRx

RevPAR (revenue per available room), Occupancy Rates, Census, Revenue per Employee, RPU (revenue per user), Utilization, Realization Rate, Per Client Profitability…these are just a few of the many performance metrics that can be measured using FRx. Every industry has its own measures of performance, and all are handled using FRx calculations.

The calculations depend on whether the statistical data lives in the GL or in Excel. For the purposes of this explanation, we’ll assume it is maintained in Excel. (For what it’s worth, I much prefer to see it in the GL, but that’s another story.)

So here’s how to pull that statistic in from Excel. There are two different ways to use Excel with FRx, and we’ll focus on the one that’s most commonly used with a single statistic, the Combined Method. [click to continue…]
